Dr. Robert V. Antonucci

Dr. Antonucci is currently President of Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. A 30-year veteran of education, Dr. Antonucci served as the Commissioner of Education of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1992 to 1998. He was responsible for all of the state’s early childhood, elementary, secondary, vocational-technical and adult basic educational programs. He played a key role in the passage and enactment of the state’s historic Education Reform Act of 1993, a landmark law now seen as a national model. Managing a staff of 470 and a budget of $3.4 billion, he fundamentally reformed the state’s education finance system, school governance, curriculum development and charter schools. During his tenure, Dr. Antonucci also established one of the nation’s most aggressive capital campaigns for education initiatives, raising more than $12 million from federal and private sources.
Dr. Antonucci left the Commissioner’s position to become President and Chief Executive Officer of Harcourt Learning Direct and Harcourt Higher Education. He also served as Chief Executive Officer of Harcourt e-Learning and the California College for Health Sciences. All are higher learning companies of Harcourt General, Inc. Harcourt Higher Education was the first online college in Massachusetts to be granted authority to award bachelor and associate degrees.
Dr. Antonucci assumed the Presidency of Fitchburg State College after being at Riverdeep-The Learning Company, where he was President of the School Group. Riverdeep is a leading provider of electronic educational software offered via the Internet and CD-ROM.
Before being named Commissioner of Education, Dr. Antonucci was Superintendent of Schools in Falmouth, Massachusetts, for 12 years. As Superintendent, he served as the chief executive officer of the town’s K 12 school system, which included approximately 4,700 students and 650 employees.
From 1974 to 1980, Dr. Antonucci served as assistant superintendent of the Leominster, Massachusetts, Public Schools. He began his career in education in 1967 as a teacher and administrator in the public schools of Lunenburg, Massachusetts.
Dr. Antonucci earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fitchburg State College and a doctorate in education from Boston University, where he also served as an adjunct faculty member from 1994 to 1998, teaching graduate courses on state and local politics and education.
Dr. Antonucci was awarded an honorary degree from Fitchburg State College in 2001, and has also been presented with the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. In addition, he holds honorary degrees from Endicott College and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. A member of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Bank and a corporator at Cape Cod Healthcare, Dr. Antonucci is an elected town meeting member in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
